Mumps Virus Vaccine is used for:
Providing protection (immunity) against mumps infection in persons 12 months of age and older.
Mumps Virus Vaccine is a vaccine. It works by stimulating the body to create antibodies, which provide protection against mumps infection.
Do NOT use Mumps Virus Vaccine if:
- you are allergic to any ingredient in Mumps Virus Vaccine, including gelatin
- you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, difficulty breathing) to neomycin
- you have a serious illness or infection
- you have a disease that affects the bone marrow or lymphatic system (eg, leukemia, lymphoma)
- you are pregnant
- you have a weakened immune system or are taking immunosuppressant medicines
- you have advanced HIV or AIDS, a blood disease, untreated active tuberculosis (TB), or a lack of B-lymphocytes (hypogammaglobulinemia)
Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.
Before using Mumps Virus Vaccine:
Some medical conditions may interact with Mumps Virus Vaccine. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
- if you are planning to become pregnant or are breast-feeding
- if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
- if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- if you are allergic to eggs; have a fever, a tumor, or HIV; or have a family history of immune system problems
- if you have ever had an allergic reaction affecting the skin from neomycin use
- if you have had a blood transfusion, have a low blood platelet count, or received human immune serum globulin within the last 3 months
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Mumps Virus Vaccine. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
- High-dose corticosteroids (eg, prednisone) because the effectiveness of this vaccine may be decreased

How to use Mumps Virus Vaccine:
Use Mumps Virus Vaccine as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- This vaccine is administered as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. It is given as part of the recommended immunization schedule for children and adults. Ask your doctor any questions that you may have about Mumps Virus Vaccine.
- It is very important to receive each vaccine as scheduled. Be sure your doctor knows your or your child's vaccination history and medical record.
- If your child misses a dose of the vaccine series, contact your child's doctor immediately.

Important safety information:
- If you have a TB skin test within 6 weeks of receiving this vaccine, tell the doctor that you have received this vaccine.
- Mumps Virus Vaccine should not be given less than 1 month before or after administration of other live virus vaccines. Make sure your doctor knows your vaccination history.
- Mumps Virus Vaccine is not recommended for use in INFANTS younger than 12 months of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Mumps Virus Vaccine if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. After receiving Mumps Virus Vaccine, do not become pregnant for at least 3 months without checking with your doctor. It is unknown if Mumps Virus Vaccine is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Mumps Virus Vaccine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
Possible side effects of Mumps Virus Vaccine:
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Burning or stinging at the injection site; diarrhea; mild fever; mild swelling of lymph glands.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); fainting; seizures; unusual bruising or bleeding.
